The Nationwide Caterers Association (NCASS) is shining a light on good LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) safety management for this year’s Gas Safety Week, taking place from 9th – 15th September.

NCASS supports thousands of small independent mobile catering businesses including event and festival caterers, all of whom regularly use LPG. The national Gas Safety Week campaign is coordinated by Gas Safe Register and aims to raise awareness of gas safety and the importance of regular maintenance and checks on appliances.

NCASS is passionate about raising the profile of safe use of LPG across the industry and recently launched its LPG Gas Safety Engineer Partnership scheme for mobile & outdoor event caterers in an effort to provide the tools and knowledge needs to trade safely by eliminating potential safety hazards or illegal practices in the industry.

As well as this, NCASS has run LPG training for over 60 local authorities and has a sector specific training course for caterers and event organisers who use LPG.

Gas Safety Week is an opportunity for NCASS to share its experience and knowledge of safe LPG use within the industry. Focuses of the week will include the do’s and don’ts of cylinders, why servicing and maintenance is so important and a guide to LPG appliances. NCASS will be sharing useful guides and assets throughout the course of the week to ensure businesses can learn about LPG safety.

Fiona West, Environmental Health Specialist at NCASS, said: “LPG remains the primary source of power for cooking and heating for many mobile and outdoor catering businesses, however, very little have the right support to ensure their appliances are up-to-date and safe to use. Bad maintenance can be catastrophic, which is why education on gas safety is so important within the industry and a main reason for us launching our LPG Gas Safety Engineer Partnership scheme.

“Gas Safety Week is an opportunity for us to demonstrate good practice and ensure any unsafe operations within the catering industry are a thing of the past. We hope businesses will take advantage of the free support and guidance on offer.”
