5th August 2024
Brighton & Hove Pride once again brought music, culture and joy in abundance for another spectacular year and a weekend packed full of campaigning, protest and celebration in equal measure.
Kickstarting the weekend was the annual Pride parade, which streamed vibrantly through the city, led by a group of community representatives including Lady Phyll and UK Black Pride, and veteran activist Ted Brown of the Gay Liberation Front. With this year’s theme of ‘JOY’, hundreds of thousands of fabulous folks lined the streets to show their support, solidarity and allyship. The Pride parade showcases hundreds of charities, community groups and small businesses, the emergency services, the NHS and representatives of other Pride organisations, and is a time for the community and allies to come together to protest, party and paint the city rainbow.
At Preston Park, Brighton & Hove Pride’s two-day community fundraising event FABULOSO saw thousands attend across the two-day extravaganza. The all-conquering Girls Aloud were Saturday’s main stage headliners. Cheryl, Kimberly, Nadine and Nicola made their Brighton Pride debut as a band performing an exclusive UK festival show, which included so many surprises, ALL the hits and a special guest appearance from Brighton pride alumni Olly Alexander. Throughout the day we were treated to standout sets from multi-award winning actor, musician and LGBTQ+ icon, Billy Porter; kitchen disco queen Sophie Ellis Bextor, as well as DJ extraordinaires Fat Tony and DJ Paulette who brought the party to the Pride Dance Tent. Across the park, attendees enjoyed a fiesta of diverse LGBTQ+ artists and immersive experiences from the Beefmince Dance Tent, Cabaret Big Top, Diva Dance Tent, and Queertown and were treated to performances from the likes of The Bitten Peach, DJ Sammy, Rozalla and many more.
The fun continued in the gorgeous Sunday sunshine with a day headed by pop sensationMIKA, who brought his vitalic performance and catalogue of perfect pop hits including ‘Grace Kelly’, ‘Love Today’, ‘Big Girl (You are Beautiful)’, ‘Happy Ending’ ‘Lollipop’ and more in a show that featured a giant inflatable rainbow, Mika walking through the audience, involving them in his stories and a dazzling firework display finale. The day also brought the energy with iconic performances from S Club, who wore custom pride outfits and had the huge FABULOSO crowd reaching for the stars; acclaimed Abba tribute Björn Again; the iconic Gabrielle, who made the crowd’s ‘Dreams’ come true, as well as girli, Lynks and Peaches, who all starred on the Queer/Alt Stage for its incredible inaugural year.
Over in Kemp Town, the Pride Village Party saw local businesses in St. James’s Street and Marine Parade bring the party for an unforgettable weekend to raise extra funds for theBrighton Rainbow Fund and the Pride Social Impact Fund.
See you in 2025 for more fun and FABULOSONESS!
